Was sind Fjorde – und wie sind sie entstanden?
Ein Fjord ist ein langer, schmaler Meeresarm mit steilen Seitenwänden oder Bergen. Typisch für Fjorde sind U-förmige Täler, die sehr tief sein können. Bei der Mündung, wo der Fjord auf das offene Meer trifft, sind sie noch flacher. Viele Fjorde haben Seitenarme – einige der bekanntesten norwegischen Fjorde sind in Wirklichkeit Seitenarme!
Entstanden sind die Fjorde durch gewaltige Gletscher, die sich unter dem Meeresspiegel weiter ausdehnten. Über einen Zeitraum von 2,5 Millionen Jahren wurden die Täler durch wiederholte Gletscherzyklen in die Landschaft gegraben. Mit anderen Worten: Die Fjorde verdanken ihre Form den Gletschern.
Wussten Sie schon? Das Wort „Fjord“ stammt vom altnordischen fjorðr und bedeutet so viel wie „gehen“, „überqueren“ oder „durchqueren“.
Wie tief sind die Fjorde?
Kein Fjord gleicht dem anderen, sie können aber sehr tief sein – Norwegens tiefster Fjord ist der Sognefjord in Fjord Norwegen mit 1303 Metern.
Wie lang sind die Fjorde?
Auch die Länge variiert: Der Sognefjord ist mit 205 Kilometern zudem der längste Fjord und erstreckt sich von Solund im Westen bis nach Skjolden am Fuß der Nationalparks Jotunheimen, Jostedalsbreen und Breheimen.
Der Hardangerfjord ist mit 180 Kilometern der zweitlängste Fjord des Landes.

Welche Fjorde sollte man besuchen?
Nirgendwo sonst auf der Welt gibt es mehr Fjorde als an der norwegischen Küste – über 1000 dieser Meeresarme durchschneiden die eindrucksvolle Landschaft.
Die meisten dieser Fjorde befinden sich in Nordnorwegen, darunter der Trollfjord und der Lyngenfjord. Viele der berühmtesten Fjorde liegen jedoch im Westen des Landes in der Region Fjord Norwegen. Dazu zählen der Geirangerfjord, der Nærøyfjord (ein Seitenarm des Aurlandsfjords), der Hardangerfjord, der Lysefjord, der Nordfjord und natürlich der Sognefjord.
Man kann sogar eine Städtereise gut mit einem Fjordbesuch kombinieren – zum Beispiel mit dem Oslofjord direkt bei der Hauptstadt.

Warum sind norwegische Fjorde einzigartig?
Weltweit gibt es nur wenige echte Fjordregionen – und Norwegen ist die Heimat der vielleicht legendärsten und spektakulärsten Fjorde.
Der Geirangerfjord und der Nærøyfjord in Fjord Norwegen gehören sogar zum UNESCO-Weltnaturerbe. Sie sind die einzigen UNESCO-Stätten Norwegens, die ausschließlich auf Grundlage ihrer natürlichen Merkmale gelistet wurden. Die einzigartige Fjordlandschaft der beiden Fjorde wird von der UNESCO als „außergewöhnliche Naturschönheit“ beschrieben.
Seit 2005 stehen die beiden Meeresarme auf der Welterbeliste.
Wann ist die beste Reisezeit für die Fjorde?
Viele Fjorde kann man das ganze Jahre über besuchen – sogar im Winter! Dank des Golfstroms und der warmen Luftströmungen durch den Corioliseffekt herrscht in den norwegischen Fjorden ein vergleichsweise mildes Klima. Sie frieren daher selten zu.

Herbst (September–Oktober): Farbenprächtige Natur. Weniger Gäste. Kreuzfahrten meist noch möglich, aber weniger Abfahrten.
Winter (November–März): Verschneite, dramatische Landschaft. Einzigartige Fjordkreuzfahrten, idyllische Atmosphäre. Einige Aktivitäten und Unterkünfte sind evtl. geschlossen – vorher prüfen.
Kommt man mit Zug, Bus oder Boot zu den Fjorden?

Ja, Sie können die Fjorde auch mit dem Auto erkunden. Aber Achtung: Viele Regionalstraßen in abgelegenen Gebieten sind kurvenreich und eng. Fahren Sie – insbesondere mit Wohnmobil oder Caravan – vorsichtig, planen Sie Ihre Route im Voraus und unterschätzen Sie nicht die Entfernungen und Fahrzeiten in Norwegen.
