About Møvik Fort and Kristiansand Cannon Museum:

Møvik Fort, the Germans' "Batterie Vara", was begun in 1941. Large cannons and several thousand sea mines were to prevent Allied warships from penetrating the Skagerrak. This was important to secure the supply lines to occupied Norway. After World War II, during the Cold War, the facility became part of the Norwegian coastal artillery, under the name Møvik Fort. One of the large cannons still stands in its original position.

A diesel generator and electrical system supply power to the cannon in the same way as 80 years ago. The diesel generator (main generator) in the engine room is a Deutz, model 1940, and produces 196 kW.

The cannon is a 38cm S.K. C/34 cannon, the second largest gun ever mounted on land. The large weapon was manufactured by Friedrich Krupp in Essen in 1940 and still stands in the bunker that was built for it in the years 1941-1942. Its dimensions are considerable, both physically and historically. The weight of the cannon alone is 337 tons. This is the same type of gun that the battleships "Bismarck" and "Tirpitz" were equipped with.
