Exhibition on wartime sailors

Book

Get an insight into one of the most brutal chapters in Norwegian history!

In the summer of 2020, a new and exciting exhibition on wartime sailors opened at the Maritime Museum. Our guide will take you on a special tour with wartime sailors and ships from Aust-Agder in focus. The fleet was Norway’s most important contribution to the Allied war effort, but its darker side was the loss of human life; 4647 people died on Norwegian ships during the war, either at home along the coast or on the seven seas. Furthermore, many returned home injured for life and deeply affected by the horrors of war. Although most of the wartime sailors have passed away, they are still remembered by many. They were fathers, uncles and grandfathers, and they were deeply affected by their experiences.
