Length: Approx. 14 km
Time spent: 3-5 hours
Place of departure: Bostjernlia
This view here is magnificent! On clear weather days you get a great view of, among others, Hallingskarvet and Hemsedalsfjella. Åkrefjell projects 1209 meters above sea level, while the drum mat is 1176 meters above sea level.
The tour starts and ends on gravel road but most of the walk goes on a well-traveled path. Red-marked bars mark the round trip. Parts of the trail cross over marshes, so you need to be prepared for wet areas, especially between Øyvatn and the Trommenatten.
The tour can be started from Nystølkroken Kafè or from the parking lot at Båtstjernlia as we suggest here. Start on gravel road south towards Åkrefjell. The road goes over a pile, then past the east bank of the idyllic Østre Båtstjern. After 2 km the road crosses to the path, keep right. Follow the trail all the way to the top of Åkrefjell, where you deserve a breather. Enjoy the view!
From Åkrefjell it carries back in the same direction 3-400 meters, before the trail continues south (signposted to Øyvatn / Hallingnatten). Follow the trail 1.5 km to the junction at the south end of the large lake Øyvatn. Here you go north, follow the red bars. About 2 km after the Øyvatn junction you reach the junction towards Trommenatten. If you have the power to do so, we recommend the detour back and forth to the top of Trommenatten. Back at the junction you continue north, after a while you are back on the dirt road. Follow this back to the parking lot.
Finish off with an ice-cold drink and a home-cooked meal at Nystølkroken Kafè, just a mile north of the parking lot.
Have a great hike!
