Hiking to Åsbrona, Sunndal

Drive 8 km from Sunndalsøra towards Oppdal along highway 70. Drive until you pass Elverhøy bridge and gets Grødal farm, Utistu, on the left side. Shortly after the farm has passed you come to a forest road on the right. This is the starting point for the tour. The trip to Åsbrona is one of the most popular of the short hiking trips in Sunndal, with about 10,000 registered visitors annually. The walk is easy and goes all the way along a narrow road made for tractors. From the end og the route you get  a good view down on Driva and Grøa, Leikvin bygdemuseum and the chapel where the village's celebrity lady Arbuthnot is buried. On the horizon you can gaze over Vinnubreen, Furunebba and Dronninga. To the north-east it overlooks the Sunndal fjord in background. The tour can be walked all year, but dress according to weather and snow conditions and bring headlamp in the dark season. The trip can be extended to a tour by going further up and follow the ridge to the east before you go down beside Grøa river. Look for a small red mark on the side of the view point. From here the path leads steeply up to the ridge to be followed eastward. On the way you pass the site of several old summer farms. The path by Grøa river is slightly marked and hard to find, here you have to watch closely! The whole tour will take approximately 1,5 - 2 hours.  From Åsbrona it is also possible to go up to Kaldfonna (1850moh), down to Serkjedalen, Dalasetra then follow Grølia to Grøa. It is a heavy tour which s not recommended to do without company of someone who knows the area well.
