The battle of Rastarkalv, year 955, was a historic battle on the southern tip of the island Frei, Kristiansund. The battle stood between the king Hakon the good Harladson and Eirkssønnene, ie sons of Hakon half brother Eirik Blodøks.
Hakon the Good was king from 920-961 and the son of Harald and maid Tora Moster Stang. Hakon fought about the royal powerr against his half-brother, Eric Bloodaxe their sons. Eirikssønnene came from Denmark with a big army and more than 20 ships. Hakon had only 9 ships and support from farmers in the area led by Egil Ullserk. It could be between 40 and 50 men in each ship, still king Hakon and his men won the battle against great odds due to a stratigic move of Egil Ullserk and his army.
Egil Ullserk died in the battle. Old Eirikson, one of the sons of Eirik Bloodaxe, also died in the conflict. Haakon buried Egil Ullserk in a ship together with the people who had died in the battle. There is a stone monumentin memory of Egil Ullserk and his men who died at the Battle of Rastarkalv.
