Nygard – hikes for the whole family all year round.
Nygard is a popular all-year excursion spot with many great hiking and skiing routes. In the winter, the waters normally freeze, and the route to Nystølen is an easy and popular skiing trip for the whole family. For skiers that are more skilled there are great destinations like Nåmdalsfjellet (839 m) and Storfjellet (1259 m). The routes to the summits are not marked, and you should have some winter mountain experience before you set out.
There are two summer mountain farms called Nystølen at Nygard. The farm by Svartavatnet was pasture for cows in the earlier days, while the farm by Steinavatnet was summer home for the goats from the farm Nåmdal. The old trackway to the goat summer farm is clearly visible and goes on the right side of Steinavatnet, marked with blue markings and signs. There are some talus along the route and smaller marshy areas. This nice hike is graded as easy–moderate, and is suitable also for smaller children.
Estimated time, Nystølen: 45 minutes one way
Grading, Nystølen: Blue, easy – moderate
Difference in altitude, Nystølen: 90 m (410–500 meters above sea level)
How to get there from Bergen: Nygard is situated 102 km northeast of Bergen. Drive E39 northbound to Romarheim, turn to the right onto FV 569 towards Mo in Modalen. Continue on 569 to Øvre Helland, where you take to the right onto the gravel road to Nygard.
