Yrisætra mountain pasture farm

In the past, these pasture farms were in active use in the summer. The cattle grazed in the open mountain pastures and were milked on the farm. Dairymaids would often live on the farm and were responsible for tending the animals during the summer months. The dairymaids were also responsible for making cheese and butter from the milk. The produce was transported down to the farms on a pulley. The first telephone in Oldedalen valley was installed on Yrisætra summer pasture farm so they could communicate with the people back home at the farm. That was in 1920.

Directions to the Yrisætra summer pasture farms:

To get too outer Yrisætra farm, follow the gravel road up towards the uppermost farm on Yri. Continue on the marked trail from Bakkeyri and up to the meadow.
To get too inner Yrisetra farm, follow the same gravel road for about 100 metres and then turn left over the bridge. Follow the gravel road on to Simatunet mountain farm and continue on the marked farm track.
The trails up to the Yrisetra mountain farms are through steep terrain. You can enjoy the views from the farm pastures towards Melkevollsbreen glacier to the south and Olden to the north. You may want to walk from outer Yrisetra farm to Yriskåla and Yribesseggen ridge on the routes that are marked with varying clarity. There’s paid parking at Yrineset.
