Driving Trollheimsveien will present you with some of the greatest scenery in mountainous Norway.  All along the route you have easy access to untouched and diverse nature.  Choose from innumerable hikes in an area containing over 20 cabins where you can dine, rest and sleep. This brochure mainly presents the privately owned cabins. For more information on the cabins owned by the tourist associations, check www.kntur.no and www.tt.no

At the top of Sunndal you can visit a unique nature phenomenon in Norway. Steep mountain hills, moraines and plateaus create a fan shaped river system where five rivers meet in a symphony of water.

Approaching Sunndalsøra from Oppdal, you will pass by Vinnufossen, Norways tallest waterfall. The waterfall springs out of Vinnubreen, the largest glacier in Møre og Romsdal, and cascades down the mountain, dropping about 860 meters in several stages. Vinnufossen can be experienced from an information point right next to R70, but the greatest view of it can be had if you walk the foot- and bike-path a few hundred meters  up from the parking.

Salmon fishing
River fishing is available in four rivers along this route. Driva in Sunndal, and Surna, Bøvra and Toåa  in Surnadal. You can stay in a hotel, caravan site or cabin. Every year Norsk Laksefestival is held in Surnadal featuring a market, concerts, fishing competitions and many activities for the whole family. Check http://www.norsklaksefestival.no/ for more information on this year’s festival.

Trollheimsveien is the route where mountain-Norway meets fjord-Norway. Stangvikfjorden, Ålvundfjorden, Sunndalsfjorden, Surnadalsfjorden, Hamnesfjorden and even more fjords are within reach. Hire a boat or join a guided fishing trip.

Fresh water fishing
Such big land areas provide a paradise for fresh water fishing, regardless of the level of skill or adventure seeking. This Eldorado is almost unexplored, and provides great potential for finding your own fairy tale kingdom. In Trollheimen more than 200 fishing lakes have been mapped out, and Sunndal has over 100 lakes with fish in. Maps and further information on mountain fishing can be acquired at the tourist information, verneområdestyret for Trollheimen, http://www.nasjonalparkstyre.no/trollheimen, and Sunndal Fjellstyre, http://www.sunndal-fjellstyre.no.

Back in the day traditional summer farming was key to survival. Lush mountain grazing had to be exploited and while the animals were up in the mountains necessary maintenance could be performed on the farm buildings. Today there are three summer farms still running along Trollheimsveien. All these summer farms have their season about the same time as the summer holiday in Norwegian schools. If you’re planning a visit at the end of the season, it could be wise to check availability, as the season will vary a bit with the weather.
