Overview

There is a famous wolf that once lived in Vegårshei. It was the only wolf in modern times that was legally hunted and shot. This is quite a rarity because there are not too many wolves left in the country. It is said that the wolf wondered into Vegårshei from another county and attacked local sheep.

There is a famous wolf that once lived in Vegårshei. It was the only wolf in modern times that was legally hunted and shot. This is quite a rarity because there are not too many wolves left in the country. It is said that the wolf wondered into Vegårshei from another county and attacked local sheep.

In 1983 the Government granted a licence for local hunters to go after the wolf and a party of 40 hunters were in pursuit of the wolf until it was eventually shot and killed on 11th of January 1984 by a local hunter named Nils Belland. This created a lot of publicity and great press coverage and kept the nick name Lars Saga who was the hunting leader.

Researchers at the Uppsala University in Sweden concluded that the wolf was of Finnish descent. It was roughly 5 years old and weighed 46 kilograms when it was found.

Today the stuffed wolf stands in the Vegårshei Savings Bank's offices in Myra. There is also a simple wolf monument where the wolf was shot, just southwest of Kilsloftet. It is a little difficult to find ans it is a little in the woods, but more precise directions can be obtained at Kilsloftet.
