Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus- what is this? -Better Moments

Book

Our summer adventure will give you a great combination of hiking and snowmobiling on Svalbard. On this trip, you will enjoy the beautiful views around Longyearbyen and of an island slowly awaking from hibernation.

Better Moments #1 TripAdvisor 2016 On this hiking trip will also get to drive snowmobiles on the Longyear glacier. We will start with a brief in our Explorers' club. Here you have to show your driving licence and we will give you a helmet. After that we'll drive up to Nybyen where the tour starts, with a one hour hike up to the Longyear glacier. The hike is not very hard but the terrain is quite rocky and we have to cross and jump over some small streams, so it might be a challenge for some. When we reach the glacier, we will teach you how to drive and handle the snowmobile. We will drive 4 km up on the glacier before we reach the pass (600 meters above sea level). From the top we will have a stunning view over Longyearbyen at the north, and the valley, Fardalen, to the south. Fardalen is surrounded with snow-covered mountains and is known as the "playground" for all local snowmobile drivers. We will have lunch and warm drinks while we enjoy the view from the pass. After ca 30 minutes driving, we are back down from the glacier and ready to walk down in the moraine areas, here you have chance to find really nice fossils. This, however, require there is no snow on the ground. Normally the moraine is snow free from mid-June until October. We will recommend you to wear warm and windproof clothes. If you don't have high mountain boots, you can borrow snowmobile boots from us.
