Hurtigruten - "Die schönste Seereise der Welt"
Beitostølen - Sørre Hemsing - Vasetstølen (approx. 70 km) This is Mjølkevegen's most spectacular stretch, but also the most demanding. The mountain village of Beitostølen offers a wide range of activities, experiences, restaurants and shopping and Beitostølen is a great base for cycling, hiking and fishing trips. Enjoy a comfortable stay at the Radisson BLU Mountain Resort where you can enjoy the spa and swimming pool facilities to get yourself ready for Mjølkevegen's toughest leg - the trip over Slettefjell. From the Radisson BLU Beitostølen, head towards town then turn right at the junction in the center down towards Beito. At the bottom of the hill turn right again and continue towards Lykkja and Slettefjellvegen. After approx. 10 km the road starts to climb up the mountain to the highest point of 1315 meters. Here there are nice wide gravel roads, with stunning views. The descent from the top is rather steep so we recommend cycling carefully, especially in wet conditions. It's worth stopping on the descent to admire the great views over towards the mountains in Vang, especially when visibility is good. Just before you reach the toll barrier, we recommend making a detour to Sputrefossen on the right-hand side. After the toll barrier take the first right and at the next intersection follow Hensåsenvegen to Sørre Hemsing. Sørem Hemsing farm is a traditional farm with buildings from the 1600s and 1800s. Here you will find comfortable accommodation in unique surroundings, good home-cooked food and a friendly welcome; a well-deserved rest point when you have traveled 30 km! From Sørre Hemsing continue downhill, crossing over Hemsing Bridge in the direction of the E16. Turn right towards Lærdal. You only ride approx. 150 meters on the main road, before entering a large picnic area on the left side. This is also the starting point for the Kongevegen stage. This section, called Kvamskleiva, is steep and narrow in places, so you may have to wheel your bike a little before reaching a slightly wider tractor road. Pay attention to hikers! The view at the top beyond Vangsmjøsa and the mountains is amazing. Continue on to Langehage and Syndin. Before you get to Syndin, you might have to remove your shoes or wear sandals, because you have to walk your bike through the river Ala. The water is usually not very high, but will probably be too high to make cycling through possible. Be careful when walking on wet rocks as they might be slippery. After crossing the river, just follow the tractor road to Syndinstogo, which is a focal point for several cycling trips in this beautiful cabin populated and boating area. From Sørre Hemsing to here, the distance is approx. 14 km. The cycle ride continues on fine gravel roads between Midtre and Sør Syndin towards Trøllhovd. There may be a few wet sections. Continue on to Murkelie and then you will cycle with Vasetvatnet on your left side, following the signs to Vaset. Cyclists will receive a warm welcome at Vasetstølen, a unique courtyard with log houses from the 1700s and 1800s. Here you can stay in charming cabins, as well as get traditional, home-cooked food. Vaset is one of the region's best starting points for both short and longer cycling trips, with Stølsvidda and Golsfjellet close by. In addition, there are good amenities here, with grocery shops, sports shops and dining places. It's a total of about 40 km between Sørre Hemsing and Vasetstølen. Have a great trip!
