Hike to Himakånå in Nedstrand
Himakånå, often called Trolltunga’s little sister, is a great hike that suits most people. The hike to the summit takes around one hour.
Himakånå, about a 50-minute drive from Haugesund, is often called Trolltunga’s little sister. People may point out that Himakånå is much less daunting than Trolltunga, but that is also its selling point. This trip is a lot more doable, much more family-friendly and, not least, quicker. The hike up only takes around an hour, and you are rewarded by panoramic views of Lysevatnet lake, the Nedstrandsfjord and farms surrounded by lush forest.
Where is Himakånå?
Himakånå is located in Nedstrand, about a 50-minute drive from Haugesund. There are few public transport services from Haugesund to Nedstrand, so we recommend hiring a car or driving your own. If you nevertheless want to take a bus, check bus service 246 to Nedstrand. It's also possible to travel to/from Nedstrand by express boat from Stavanger and Ryfylke.
How long is the hike to Himakånå?
The hike to Himakånå is 5.8 km there and back, and the rock formation is 356 meters above sea level. The hike up to the top of Himakånå takes around 1 hour, and you should set aside 2 hours for the whole trip. Remember to set aside time for photos, a snack and to simply enjoy the view from the top.
Who is the hike suitable for?
The hike is graded blue (medium difficulty), and is suitable for those with basic hiking skills in normal physical condition. The trail has some relatively steep sections, but is doable for most people. If you want to hike with a guide, Viking Adventure can organise this for groups.
Where can I park when I am going to do a hike to Himakånå?
There is a car park at the grocery shop Joker in Hinderåvåg (Hinderåvåg 12). There is a parking charge which goes to the toilet, waste disposal, maintenance and adaptation of the hiking trail.
Starting point for the hike to Himakånå
After parking at Hinderåvåg, follow the footpath east past the church, over the bridge and up the hill. You have to walk 550 metres on asphalt before the trail starts. A the top of the hill there is a red transformer kiosk and signposts from there onwards. The path is well marked from there.
When is the best time to hike to Himakånå?
This hike can be done all year, but show respect for the weather and wind conditions when you are at the top of the rock formation. Check the weather forecasts at yr.no before setting off.
What gear should I bring on the hike?
Wear good shoes and bring some food and drink. Dress according to the season, and remember to wear enough clothes. Bring an extra jacket to put on when you take a break at the top. Universal design
Much of the hike is on a gravel road, but it is relatively steep. Some sections can also be a bit marshy. It is therefore not recommended for wheelchair users, strollers etc.
