Gjendesheim Turisthytte is located at the eastern end of Gjende in Jotunheimen, and is the best-known starting point for hikes across Besseggen. Gjendesheim has been a tourist lodge for DNT, the Norwegian Trekking Association, since 1878.

Gjendesheim is located in the eastern part of Jotunheimen, by Lake Gjende, about 2 km from Maurvangen along FV 51 Valdresflye. The lodge is beautifully situated at the most important gateways to the eastern part of Jotunheimen. From here, the well-known Besseggen hike starts, and the area offers a large network of T-marked trails in varied mountain terrain.

Gjendesheim is operated by DNT and offers both accommodation and dining in tradition-rich surroundings. Here you are served local food and drink with views toward the heart of Jotunheimen. Gjendesheim also has a long season, and is open from mid-June through the autumn holiday, and from the winter holiday through Easter.

Gjendesheim is part of the Høgruta in Jotunheimen, and you can either use the lodge as a stop on a longer trip, or stay here for several days and explore local mountain peaks. In winter, it is also possible to do the Besseggen route on skis.

Gjendesheim is easily accessible by car and bus, and serves as a natural hub for mountain-goers of all ages. There is a road all the way to the lodge year-round. The Gjende boat, which runs between Gjendesheim, Memurubu, and Gjendebu, departs from the pier right outside the door at Gjendesheim.
