Budsjord, the pilgrim farm

Book

Budsjord is a historic, listed farm counting 18 buildings placed in the hillside of the Gudbrandsdalen valley between Dovre and Dombås. The pilgrim route passes by and we welcome all travellers for accommodation, dining, culture and activities.

During the Middle Ages, Budsjord (“the Bishops farm estate”) at Dovre was governed by the Arch Diocese of Nidaros and has always been an important destination for travellers.

During the Middle Ages, Budsjord (“the Bishops farm estate”) at Dovre was governed by the Arch Diocese of Nidaros and has always been an important destination for travellers, not least because it was the last stop before the arduous journey along the old king’s road over the mountain to Hjerkinn.

Budsjord was used for rearing livestock until the 1950s, and remained uninhabited until recently. The traditional farm estate is extremely well-preserved, with 17 protected buildings from the 16-1800’s that still have their original furnishings.

The farm is known particularly for its excellent craftsmanship in woodcarving, ironwork and decorative painting. Budsjord is mentioned in written material from the 1400s, has had cultural heritage interest since the early 1900s and was one of the first farms to be officially protected in Norway. The farm has been awarded the St Olav’s Rose, the hallmark of national Norwegian heritage.

Today Budsjord is an important destination for pilgrims on their way to Nidaros, and is open for accommodation, meals and a special events from 21 June – 15 August (12:00-18:00).

Budsjord is an excellent starting point for hiking in Dovrefjell and Rondane, and is also close to Jotunheimen and Romsdalen. Accommodation includes simple pilgrim accommodation in the stables (guests bring their own sleeping bags) or more comfortable accommodation in Nordstuggun and the traditional food storehouses, in single / double rooms with made-up beds. We work with a network of local food producers and offer breakfast, lunch and dinner.

We are open out of season by appointment. We soon hope to offer a place for courses, seminars and cultural events and are in the midst planning a museum.
