In 1773, the Royal Modum Blaafarveværk was established to extract cobalt from the mines at Modum. The cobalt was to be used to make the cobalt blue dye for the world?s porcelain and glass industries.

Today, Blaafarveværk is a museum measuring eight km in length offering a mixture of art, culture and countryside which creates tranquillity, recreation and experiences for every generation with:
• three new art exhibitions every year
• six exciting museum shops with unique items
• three charming places to eat, where we serve homemade food
• a children’s farm
• a children’s gallery
• guided mining tours in a mining environment dating back to the 1800s
• tours through magnificent quarries with spectacular views
• mining museums showing the technological development in the mining operation
• Eiker Gårdsysteri cheese stored in the actual mines

In 2011, the Cobalt Works and the Cobalt Mines had a total of 190.000 visitors. That makes us one of Norways most visited tourist attractions.
