Experience a different viking story!
The Vikings are known for their sailing skills and ruthless raids. But is that a complete picture? In Hyllestad you will experience a very different side of Viking life: The Vikings were also gifted stonemasons and clever tradesmen. In Hyllestad they specialized in one particular product: Millstones! Tens of thousands of millstones left Hyllestad over the centuries. The production was so large that the stone quarries are among the biggest cultural heritage sites in the whole of Norway.
On this guided tour you will be joined by a local expert guide who will show you the Millstone Park with its old quarry landscape and tell you the story of how a small place like Hyllestad could become perhaps the biggest producer in Scandinavia of one of the most important daily objects: the hand quern. While production in the quarries were the men’s world, the finished quernstones became the women’s tool for grinding grain and making flour. On your tour you can try to work the stone with a pickaxe and grind grain on a quern.
