About Verdensteatret
Verdensteatret is one of Europe's oldest cinemas still in operation and an important part of Tromsø's film and cultural history. Located in Storgata in Tromsø city centre, the cinema first opened in 1916, when films were accompanied by live music.
The historic building has retained much of its original character. Inside the auditorium, you can find wall paintings from 1921 by artist Sverre Mack, depicting scenes inspired by Norwegian folk tales.
Verdensteatret is home to Cinemateket in Tromsø and normally hosts a varied programme of films, festivals and cultural events. It is also an important venue during Tromsø International Film Festival (TIFF) in January and the Silent Film Days, where classic silent films are accompanied by live music.
The venue is also used for concerts, debates, seminars and other cultural events.
