Pump up you tires and set off on a cycling adventure in Geilo!
Starting from Geilojordet, the popular cultural and nature trail Ustedalsfjorden Rundt winds along the fjord. The road follows the shore of Ustedalsfjorden for the first 2 km, reaching Geilo Beach, a sandy area perfect for a swim. Continue along the road to pass the Fekjo Burial Ground dating from 900 AD and the Fekjo Cultural Heritage Park. Notice the wind- and color-themed houses created by artists Gunnveig Nerol and Terje Isungset. Visitors can explore the 7 houses and listen to the wind’s music by playing the sound tree in each house.
Next, you cycle over Tuftebrui, a special timber structure that is an exact replica of the protected bridge from 1884, and continue along the south side of Ustedalsfjorden toward Geilo. There are several rest areas with barbecue facilities and fishing spots along the way. The last section passes the golf course in Vestlia, then on to Solli and back to Geilo town center.
Distance: 10 km, car-free path
Surface: Gravel. Suitable for bike trailers and walking.
Tips: Bring swimwear and stop by Geilo Beach!
Season: Dependent on snowmelt, typically from early June through October.
Starting from Geilojordet, cycle through the town center and follow Timrehaugvegen past Dr. Holms Hotel and Slaatta Ski Resort to Bardøla High Mountain Hotel. Follow the signs from Bardølavegen to Lutenvegen and continue via Øyovegen to Øyo Knife Factory. Nearby is the well-known and traditional cutlery factory Skaugum Bestikk. Brusletto & Co has been closed since 2025.
You can return along the pedestrian and bike path along Rv7 back to the center or cycle past Geilo Hallen along Slåttåhølen toward Geilo Cultural Church, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee and delicious waffles.
Distance: 8 km, road route
Surface: Asphalt and fine gravel
Tips: Stop by the factory outlets at Øyo and Skaugum to score tools, knives, and cutlery from Geilo.
Starting from Geilojordet, follow the same route as the Factory Tour to the junction at Luten. From here, follow signs toward Havsdalen. When you reach Havsdalen, continue toward Prestholt.
Return can be via the same road, or you can take the New Havsdals Road back to Geilo, or follow the trail from Prestholt down to Tuftelia and from there cycle along Ustedalsfjorden back to Geilo.
On this tour, you climb high into the mountains. Prestholtseter is beautifully located under the southern side of Hallingskarvet, with an active farm environment, livestock, serving of food, and sale of homemade products.
Driving the first steep 6 km by car makes the route easy and family-friendly.
Distance: 24 km round trip, moderate to somewhat challenging
Surface: Cart track and fine gravel road
Tips: The sour cream porridge at Prestholtseter is highly recommended.
Starting from Geilojordet, follow the road along the river toward Geilohallen or, at the roundabout, turn right and follow Rv7 for about 2 km, then cross the road via the footbridge.
Soon you pass Øyo factories. If the factory outlet is open, it’s worth a stop to experience Geilo’s knife-making history and perhaps buy a quality knife.
The road then climbs; turn right at the gate for the correct route to Budalen. Expect a 2 km climb before the road levels out and you’re greeted with a stunning view of Hallingskarvet. You’re now in beautiful Budalen by Budalsvatnet. Cycle along the lake all the way to the red-painted Vestreim Tourist Cabin at the eastern end of Hallingskarvet. (The service cabin is unfortunately closed, so bring a packed lunch.) A stop at the yard to enjoy the surroundings is recommended before starting the return trip.
Along the way, you can also explore the charming Vedalen Valley. Head up this detour to see Vedalsvatnet in the idyllic little valley. This is the turnaround point, after which you follow the same route back to Geilo.
This tour is not recommended for families with small children, as it involves a long, steep uphill section and narrow, winding roads on the descent. Families with children can drive up Budalsvegen to Budalsvatnet to start the tour from there. This road has a toll.
Distance: 26 km
Surface: Asphalt and gravel
Tips: Consider cycling to Havsdalen from the east end of Budalsvatnet instead of retracing the same route.
