In the project "Meet the others" at the Department of Music, improvisational musicians encounter each other's practices and explore different ways of listening and playing together.
The project explores asymmetrical rhythms and microrhythms, microtonality, new compositional forms, and musical dramaturgy linked to text. At the same time, we explore how we can share artistic development work with each other and with the field.
The project is supported by NTNU's funds for artistic development work.
Pianist Malcolm Braff has been invited as our first guest into the project because, in addition to being a fantastic musician, he has also done extensive research into new ways of understanding and experiencing rhythms.
As a conclusion to our seminar day with him, we open up our research laboratory at Dokkhuset, both with Malcolm's solo material and with some of the material being researched in the project.
Born in Brazil in 1970, Malcolm Braff began his musical upbringing in Dakar. He arrived in Switzerland at the age of 13, already with a multicultural background and a spontaneous approach to the piano. He has been a prominent figure in Swiss jazz for more than 25 years.
He has released around twenty albums with various groups, including on the prestigious Blue Note label. Braff teaches at the Musik-Akademie Basel, jazz department, and has conducted extensive and groundbreaking research in rhythmics.
