Bellini’s intense and beautiful opera Norma had its premiere in 1831, yet it presents us with difficult questions that are still relevant. At what point are you willing to give up your children? Where do you draw the line between your private and public life? Is religion something which destroys or unites? This opera is about obligations, about betrayal, about anger and shame – and about a strong friendship between two women.
We find ourselves in Gaul, over two thousand years ago. Norma is the High-priestess of the Druids – and the Druids are being occupied by the Romans. But she has fallen in love with the Roman proconsul Pollione. He, on the other hand, has a relationship with another Druid priestess, Adalgisa. When Norma discovers this betrayal, she first threatens to kill her children by Pollione, then gives the signal to go to war against the Romans by hitting the holy gong.
Norma experiences how her love for a man, for her people, for her children, for her friend and for her father all come into conflict with each other. Amongst these conflicts she ulitmately sacrifices herself, in love, and for love.
