Exhibition: Arvid Pettersen

Arvid Pettersen is one of the most significant painters in his generation. He has also played an important role as an art teacher. Pettersen debuted as a graphic at the Vestlands exhibition in 1967, and also attended the autumn exhibition the same year. Pettersen helped launch the art gallery Gallery 1 in Bergen and had his first solo exhibition there in 1970. At the exhibition, paintings dominated, even though he did not have formal education in this medium.  The social criticism was explicitly expressed in Pettersen's contribution to the EEC (EF) debate two years later, when he used wooden barrels of wood as a basis for his realistic motives from Sunnfjord to Svolvær with inscribed slogans from the outskirts of Norway to Brussels. This agitating aspect he later widened both thematically and quaintly in a series of images from the mid 1970s, corrugated fields, ditches in marshes, coastal moorers and snowmobiles in the mountains stood as a "trace" of man's efforts. Exhaustion on natural resources went as a red thread through his paintings at the Venice Biennale in 1976.  In the exhibition at Hå, he shows his work through the decades of being an artists, together with a new painting.
